News from the Dugout – 8 October ‘09

Bothasig / Durbanville Derby Day 3rd Oct.Well, the day dawned for all our teams to take part in the inaugural Diamond Cup Derby. This will be held annually between Durbanville and Bothasig baseball Clubs, alternate venue each year. Congratulations to Bothasig Baseball Club for putting on such a great show, as usual their fields, facilities, music (old favorites) and service was excellent! The weather was extremely kind to us, so much so, that we baked to a gentle lobster colour by the time the sun had set! It was lovely to see the U10’s taking part in coach pitch, and hitting the ball really well, with runs flowing from both teams! Although all our teams played with enthusiasm and passion, only the 2nd team managed to win. (9 – 5)I am sure that by this time next year we will be more determined and better prepared to meet the challenge presented by the Bothasig Baseball teams!

Team Report: Social Side

Durbanville 3 vs Bothasig 8         03 October 2009 Vicky Du Randt started on the mound to Billy Rohm and both did a sterling job. A pulled hammy for John Dunlop resulted in him having to leave the field, and was replaced by Peter Joubert. Scores were tied 1 all at the top of the 2nd . A few fielding errors in the 3rd resulted in several runs being scored against us. Jakes Van Rensburg came on to relieve and got our defence back on track. We came back on the offensive in the 4th but too little to late.Well done to Harold Richter who took his “virgin” catch in the outfield. Morne De Bruyn was outstanding at 2nd. Many thanks to U12 Coach, Randall Phillips for the guest appearance, we hope it’s not the last.

Five Steps to a Sweet Swing

By following these five important steps, your swing will improve immensely. Click on the steps to see examples or simply start here

1.       Stay in the launch position

2.       Trigger your weight back3.       Stay inside the ball4.       Maintain flat hands5.       Extend the lead arm

The Absolutes of Hitting

The Lau philosophy of hitting is taught exclusively at our schools. Our philosophy is based on what we call the laws or absolutes of hitting:
  • Achieve a balanced stance
  • Launch the bat from a 45 degree position off the back shoulder
  • Develop a rhythm to alleviate tension
  • Stride with front foot closed
  • Take a direct path to the ball; pull the knob to the ball
  • Develop good weight transfer -- from a firm rigid back-side to a firm rigid front-side
  • Keep head still and down at contact
  • Hit through the ball with lead arm extension and flat hands
  • Finish the swing high
