Oktoberfest This year the plans for the Oktoberfest were put in place early in the season. It is one of the few big fund raisers that we as a club manage, so that we can boost our coffers. There was a great team effort, ably lead by Tine Ferreira. Ticket sales started early, as they wanted to get an idea of catering requirements for the event. Tina, Helen and Gayleigh went on the offensive and hunted down every member of DBC and opposition teams to try and sell tickets! In total 107 tickets were sold and about 90 people attended. Next year we must aim for 150! On Friday afternoon, Tine and her helpers were down at the club decorating tables and making the place look special. Saturday evening everyone was rushing back from late senior fixtures to get back to the club to assist with ticket sales, serving food and drinks! The food was delicious, the drinks flowed, everyone got onto the dance floor, and a great party was enjoyed by all! The last revelers were kicked out at 3h30 the next morning!! Thank-you to all who gave of their time and effort to make it such a great evening! Many thanks, to Anna Herholdt for generously sponsoring the band, Synergy, and to SABELCO (Marc Moreau) who generously sponsored the beer mugs. A special word of thanks to all who turned up on the Sunday for the cleanup session! If I have left anyone out, I do apologise, however know that it would not have happened without you help Take care,Tine Team Report: MLB Side 31 October 2009 Durbanville vs. Thistle at Thistle Team Report: 2nd Side 31 October 2009 DBC 4 vs. Bothasig 9 We struggled to get onto base in the 1st frame, and even though Joshua and Dean worked hard on the mound, the fielders made far too many basic errors in the field, and when it was our turn to bat we left too many batters on base. Angus put in a good performance behind the plate as catcher.Terence closed out the 5th frame for us.7th November 2009 DBC 16 vs. Blaauwberg 3 Unfortunately the weather conditions were horrendous, a howling north westerly accompanied by rain! After two frames the score was 3 all, with Terence battling to find the strike zone due to conditions. The Blaauwberg pitcher ran out of gas, and their replacement pitchers conceded 8 walks in the last two frames. Joshua closed out the last two frames. It was extremely difficult trying to hit the ball out the diamond, as the wind was so strong! The game was called by the umpire/coach after 4 frames, as the rain started to pelt down. It wasn’t pretty, but came away with a good result. MLB Player Profile – Gary Kahn Born in Miami Beach, FL, raised in Cooper City. FL (Miami/Ft. Lauderdale metropolitan area). Began playing baseball at 3 years old. My father put a baseball in my hand and I would go outside and just throw it against the wall for hours. As my brothers (Ryan-19 and Chase-18) grew up, we would always go outside and play baseball in the back yard. During high school baseball (Cooper City HS), I was nominated a Baseball Factory Pre-Season All American (2003 & 2004) and a Blue/Grey Classic Pre-Select (2004).Finished my senior season in high school with a 6-1 record and a 2.03 ERA on the hill while striking out 55 batters in 51 innings. Also led the team in strikeouts as a sophomore. Signed a full scholarship to pitch for Grinnell College (Grinnell, Iowa). Grinnell is one of the hardest universities to get into in the country and has a very prestigious reputation--on level with Harvard, Yale, Cambridge, & Oxford. Was accepted to study Trafficking & Prostitution and Genocide Studies at the University of Copenhagen (Copenhagen, Denmark) during the fall of 2007. Set school records in winning percentage and fewest losses. My senior season, was 3-0 with a 2.82 ERA and 44 strikeouts. I led the Central region in batting average against (.191). Was an All- Midwest Conference selection as a pitcher. After my senior season, I was nominated a NCAA Baseball 1st-Team All American by the Jewish Sports Review. During the summers, was invited to pitch in the Southern Collegiate League (Rock Hill Sox--Rock Hill, South Carolina) in 2006 and the prestigious Valley League (Woodstock River Bandits--Woodstock, Virginia) in 2007 & 2008. These summer leagues are by invite only and the Valley League draws some of the best college players in the nation. Numerous MLB players played in the Valley League during their time in college. My final summer in the Valley League (2008). I was near the top in statistics for relief pitchers in the league. Although I was in contact with scouts from the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, and New York Mets, I ended up going undrafted after graduation and was almost immediately signed to pitch for Karlskoga IP Bats of the Swedish Elitserien. Outside of baseball, I have a wonderful family of my mother (Fern), father (Steve), two younger brothers (Ryan--19 and Chase--18), three dogs (Rottweilers), 2 cats, and a very annoying bird. Ryan pitches for Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Maryland) on a full scholarship and Chase (who is now a senior in high school) signed a full scholarship to pitch for Macalester College (St. Paul, Minnesota). My father was born & raised in Havana, Cuba. Before baseball, he was a stand out swimmer and qualified for the Olympics when he was 17. He played baseball up until he was 35 years old when he was forced to retire due to nagging injuries. Outside of baseball, my hobbies include fishing & DJing. I graduated from Grinnell with a B.A degree in Anthropology and plan on entering law school when my baseball career is finished to become a sports agent.
